<p>The unit was created as the 347th Fighter Wing at Itazuke AB, Japan in August 1948, operating F-51s and F-61s. The 347th was redesignated a Fighter All-Weather Wing in January 1950, prior to inactivating six months later. By then a Fighter Wing, the unit was activated at Yokota AB, Japan in January 1968 with the F-4C, F-105D, EB-57E and C-130B-II. The wing returned to the USA and was located at Mountain Home AFB from May 1971 until October 1972. The 347th was inactive until July 1973 when it reformed at Takhli RTAFB, Thailand, replacing the 474th TFW with the F-111A. The unit moved to Korat RTAFB, Thailand in July 1974 until June 1975, when it was inactivated. The 347th reformed at Moody AFB in September 1975, and operated the F-4E until January 1988 when it re-equipped with the F-16A. The wing won the F-4 category at the William Tell competition in 1980 at Tyndall AFB. Conversion to the F-16C began during 1990, with one squadron deployed Al Minhad, UAE for assignment to 388th TFW (Provisional) for Desert Storm. The designation was changed to 347th Wing in July 1994 with the assignment of the C-130E.
